 Below is a breakdown of the 3 part qualification process;

Part 2 Driving Technique - consists of an eyesight test followed by a practical test of driving technique.

Part 3 Instructional Ability – consists of a practical test of the ability to instruct.

You must pass all three parts of the examination in this order and must complete the whole examination within two years of passing the theory test.

 Part 1 Theory -

This is a computerised touch screen examination lasting 90 minutes consisting of 100 questions split into four bands: Road procedure

Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians, mechanical knowledge

Driving test, disabilities, law

Publications, instructional techniques

After a break of up to three minutes the hazard perception part will start.

This consists of 14 video clips each lasting about one minute, the test contains 15 scorable hazards and the candidate can score up to 5 marks per hazard.

You need to pass both parts of the theory test to obtain an overall pass result. The overall pass mark for the multiple choice part of the test is 85%, however you must reach a minimum mark of 80% in each of the four bands. For the hazard perception test the pass mark is 57 out of a possible 75.

Part 2 Driving Technique -

The practical test of driving ability consists of tests of both eyesight and driving technique.

At the start of the test you will be asked questions on basic vehicle safety.

The test lasts for about 60 minutes and you must pass both parts of the test.

To pass the test you must Drive to a high standard of competence,

Part 3 Instructional Ability –

For the part 3 test, a DVSA examiner will observe you delivering a client centered driving lesson. This will last approximately 1 hour.

For this, you may take a person that is currently learning to drive, or a full licence holder futhering their driving abilities.

you'll be marked on 17 areas of competence that are grouped into 3 categories:

  • Lesson planning
  • Risk Management
  • Teaching and learning strategies

You'll get a score from 0 to 3 for each of the 17 competencies, which are added up to work out if you've passed the test, and what your grade will be.

You can pay for and complete your training as a full package covering all 3 parts of the qualifying process or at an hourly Pay as you go rate for Parts 2 & 3.
